Student project: I decided to learn how to create realistic backgrounds from start to finish. I wanted to learn some brand new programs that I had never touched before, such as Unreal Engine 5, Marmoset Toolbag, and Speedtree. Adobe Substance Designer and Painter were basically all new to me as well. I took up a small but detailed scene so that I could focus on learning a whole pipeline, where I now have an understanding of the complete 3D Graphics Pipeline, beginning from concept art to modeling, texturing, environment setup, and post-production. The scene was inspired by the game Strange Brigade as back then I had just downloaded it. The main hero asset that I created is the Egyptian boat, which includes hand-painted hieroglyphs and detailed texturing and baking. The whole project was created on a 4-year-old laptop, which posed a few problems on how much I could achieve and in what time, but overall I am happy with the new techniques I have learned and wish to continue on my journey!
---------------------------
The process started with modeling in Blender, to High Poly detail in Zbrush, UV’s in Blender, High to Low Baking in Marmoset Toolbag, Texturing in Substance Painter, Final scene setup in Unreal Engine 5, and post-production/color grading in Substance Painter and Unreal Engine 5. I kept in mind a pipeline suitable to go with Lumin and Nanite possibilities in UE5.
----------------------------
The trees were made using SpeedTree. Aside from the boat, temple walls, pillars, and main entrance, the rest of the scene utilizes a combination of Megascans and one third party UE Marketplace asset. Engaging in this project has enabled me to enhance my skills and gain a more profound understanding of not just the workflow but also the intricacies of Color, Composition, Lighting, and Mood. The Artstation learning center played a pivotal role in equipping me with essential foundations, revealing the extensive facets involved in crafting a compelling scene. Theres much more I would like to improve and try in the future, so will be coming back to those tutorials!
